Crest Canyon Hiking Trail

(Leer en Español)

If you look to the south across the lagoon you will see a large canyon in the distance. This is Crest Canyon and there is a beautiful hiking trail open to the public. Crest Canyon has undergone several habitat restorations in order to restore the native habitat. This canyon has seen huge success and is home to the endangered bird species the California gnatcatcher. This trail is easy to moderate and 1.15 miles in length. Although the trail resides within the SDRP, the trail is actually managed by the City of San Diego and City of Del Mar. It features an approximately 250’ vertical climb through the coastal bluffs of the San Dieguito Lagoon. This canyon is not accessible from this side of the lagoon. You must exit this trail and turn left on San Dieguito Road which is just south on Jimmy Durante, past the bridge, and over the river. There is a small kiosk marking the trailhead and parking is available along the side of the road.
